Født 1950. Professor og indehaver af lærestolen i Nordens historie ved Universitetet i Greifswald, Tyskland i årene 1996-2017. Har et større forfatterskab om Nordens og Østersøens historie bag sig, og er redaktør og udgiver af tre bogrækker. Medlem af flere akademier og selskaber og gæstelærer ved flere universiteter. 2017 udnævnt til æresdoktor ved Universitetet i Helsingfors.
